MARCH EDIBLE GARDEN COURSE: 4-5:30pm Mondays in April
We all know that a freshly picked vegetable right from the garden tastes amazing, provides better nutrition and give us a sense of accomplishment like few other things. However, getting your own vegetable and herbs started can be intimidating.
The Edible Lab’s Edible Garden Workshop is a 4 week, 90 minute hands-on experience that will guide your child through planting microgreens, vegetables and herbs from seeds in the The Edible Lab's outdoor urban garden. This interactive course will allow your child to gain the confidence they needs to grow edible plants from seeds in their own home garden.
We will also be making curriculum connections about what plants need to grow and how to take care of and transplant our seedlings to have a successful edible garden. The last class will focus on harvesting techniques to get the most out of your urban garden whether it is in pots, raised beds or in the ground.
Week 1 Starts off with growing microgreens and the herbs that make all vegetables in the garden grow better called companion plants. Creating our own seedling mix from scratch, we will be potting up tomato and pepper starts into bigger pots. We will also be looking at how to start cold hardy vegetables outside using season extenders.
Week 2 We will be starting seedlings for our Stir-fry Garden including sugar snap peas, bok choy, chinese cabbage and mustard greens. We will also look at planting some cold hardy vegetables like carrots and beets outside in the garden bed.
Week 3 The class will focus on planting Glorious Greens like Collards, Spinach and Curly Kale. We will also learn about interplanting and how to keep the garden filled with greens at different times of the growing season.
Week 4 The last class is called Splendid Salads and focuses on a rainbow of lettuces and edible flowers started outdoors. We will get a chance to learn how to harvest greens for a salad and use garden herbs grown/harvested outside to create a dressing.
